I am trying to figure out where I can dump the pictures that I have taken with my digicam. Should I bring the software disc along and try to post them on a website somewhere? Is this able to be done from computers that are connected to the net in Europe? Thanks.

For some reason I had a really hard time finding an internet cafe where I could hook up my cam. Several places had the USB hook up, but none of them worked. I ended taking my flash card to a photo shop & they dumped all my photos on disc.

^ In short, yes. But since you're probably looking at several hundred MB's worth of pics and varying upload speeds/web storage capacities, you might as well just burn them to a CD instead. That's the easiest thing to do, IMO. It should cost less than 10 euro and you can get it done at probably most internet cafes in Europe.

if you cant find an internet cafe... most places that print photos will take the pics from your camera's card and stick them on a cd while you wait.

I did a few things when I was gone because pictures are not easy to replace.

1. I posted them on this blog site My Blog which offers unlimited uploads....so no worries about space. This stored them all for me on a safe server.

2. I burned them onto not 1 but TWO cds. I would then send cds home every now and then.

Some cds got scratched but I still had the site backups so that was good.

Hope this helps!

I think what carmella meant to suggest was that you can use the TravelPUNK! Gallery to upload pics and then the thing i did was just go into any internet cafe and they will burn them on cd for ya.

Uploading to a blog/other web server/whatever still requires that you get the stuff off the camera and onto a computer at the internet cafe... I know that's pretty obvious, but let's stick to the vary basic steps of getting pictures off of a camera.

As suggested, most internet cafes can transfer your stuff from the card to a CD-R... a lot of them don't want you hooking USB devices up to their machines - especially when so many of them have sensitive pieces of junk that crash when they detect a new device. Best to let them do it for you behind the counter, then take the CDs to post the photos.

Speaking of posting photos - if the internet cafe has the software and you have the time, PLEASE reduce the size of your photos before posting them to your blog/photo gallery/etc. With 4+mp becoming the standard for digital cameras nowadays, your raw, untouched JPEGs are HUGE. They eat up time not only to upload and for other users to view, but they also eat up server space. So if you have the means to do a little reduction, please do so

I LOVE going to people's travel photo pages, and I have a load of bandwidth at my disposal, but the designer in me goes apeshit when I see tons of gigantic photos loading on one page, knowing that some poor punk on dialup is waiting forever, or worse yet, that you're paying by the minute to upload the monstrous files...

Anyway, didn't mean to go off on a crazy tangent there, but I think with all the awesome capability of the digital age comes a bit of responsibility!

I get your point omi...but I am not the most computer minded person. If the photos on the cd are 4+ megapixel, how do you reduce them to put them on a site? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question...

There are a bunch of apps out there, like Photoshop in the high-end and Picassa on the freeware end, that'll let you reduce your image sizes, etc... 'Course, you still have to know how to use them

If you find yourself with ample time to sit at the internet cafe, you can usually ask the person behind the counter to help show you how to reduce your image sizes, or often enough (as I've done before) someone sitting by you in the place can help you out.

I'd put up the basics, but it's different for each program, and god knows what programs the internet cafes are going to have.

Why do you have to reduce them? Doesn't your site automatically reduce them for you?

Mine does

Very good point - it all depends which sites you use, and many of them now do, including this one! Kudos to the programmers who've taken care of that stuff!

However, if you run your own blog or web site, as many do, or use services like Photobucket that are just made for easy dumping/displaying, you don't get all the handy-dandy automated back-end tools that take care of that stuff. I guess some of us are still too hardcore DIY to use galleries that do it for ya

AND not to mention if the site reduces them, it may cause problems later if you want to enlarge one of your digital photos. 72dpi ain't going to make it when you want to blow it up to 12"x18" or larger.

And it would be a disappointment to have taken that awesome photo that would look perfect over the couch, but have to settle with putting it in a 5"x7" frame on your coffee table instead!

So, I'm with Omi...CDs are the best way. And I'd check them before I erased it off of my camera's memory card...

I know this might be alittle late, but I have to agree with the CD. Although I did not do it myself, a girl I travelled with for awhile had a HUGE digitial moster of a camera. And every now 'n then she'd back it up to a CD. They're easy to transport and give ya the quality you need to print 'em off later.

I wasn't cool 'nuff so I just brought my film camera. Printing to a CD seems to be done nearly everywhere, even in the small tiny towns! Wasn't very expensive anywhere.
