Hey,
I live close to Calgary, been there many times. There is some beautiful ski resorts in the area. Of course they will not open tell late november. I don't know about hostels though, I'm sure they have one or two. I would suggest going to Banff or Jasper. They cater to tourist a lot more. They are the most beautiful places in Alberta. Both have fantastic ski resorts.
Good Luck and happy travels.
Oh and Calgary is just like any other city in Alberta, quite expensive if you want to buy a home or anything. I guess it depends where you are comparing it to. Alberta is a very rich province so everything is over priced. Though it is beautiful and it's worth checking out.

I'm from Calgary, and although im not a skiier or snowboarder everyone else i know is. If you're here for a while, you can usually get a ski pass that is valid at most of the mountains at sports chek in pretty much any mall. I'm not sure how much they are, but i know it give you a few free lift tickets. Pretty much any of the mountains are worth going to, especially if you know how to ski. There is one hostel in Calgary, right downtown, but i can't give you any details on it right now because i'm in Vancouver, ill find some info when i get home.
