ive been to brazil but ive never gone as a tourist (got family there).
i suggest Belo Horizonte with Ouro Preto as a day trip. really worth it. Its in the state of Minas Gerais.
And Salvador (Alta Cidade) Theres a lot of historic building and you have GOT to try acaraje (this fried dough thingy with spices and shrimp and stuff... learn from my mistake... don try to take the shells off the tiny tiny shrimps... youll only look dumb...). Thats in the state of Bahia.
Try to go to as many rural areas as you can big cities. Then you REALLY get a feel for the brazilian culture.
I've never been to Rio, but my cousins say it over rated

Bah. Don't worry about it. I'm planning to hit up Egypt, India, China and Central America by myself. And I'm a girl. I'm sure the two of you will be just fine without any added testosterone. Well, until you want some, that is.

I am going to South America from Jan 11 to Apr 5. I am flying into and out of Quito, Ecuador. I am going to buy my tickets tonight to seal the deal. Reply or PM me if you want to compare inteneraries (cos their summer is our winter!). I am going solo (I am male) and it would be neat to meet up with some people for a leg of the trip.
BGirl: I would love to meet you as well! I am always up for meeting some fellow T-punkers!
Let me know!

OK looks like I am flying to Sao Paulo, Brazil instead since it is cheaper and the times are a lot better. This also makes the Brazil Visa issue a lot easier. I will have my departing ticket and no need for a notarized bank statement as far as I can tell. I still have to go get my yellow fever shot...
My new route would start with Sao Paulo and Rio then whatever else tickles my fancy while heading toward the Amazon River (gotta do one of those boat tours!) and the over to Ecuador. I would then circle down thru peru, bolivia, chile, argentina, and back up to Brazil over the 85 day period.
Still looking for anyone else that will happen to be in the area!

Hmmm...maybe get that yellow fever shot after all, foo!
Seriously, if you're into Ancient sites, South America's primo is Macchu Picchu, in Peru (see LostFarmBoy's recent report). Next would have to be Easter Island, above 5 hours off the coast of Chile (check out ticket prices on LanChile airlines --they're the only ones that fly there).
The primo nature sites is probably the Amazon and also the Galapagos islands, which you get to in Ecuador. Gorgeous cityscapes...Rio. Everyone who's been to Beunos Aires (including our own U2fan) raves about it.
Good luck, man! Keep us posted...

I have to have it in order to come back into brazil from the other countries that I am going too. And WWM is right maybe I better get it...
Thanks WWM I will have to see what all fits my budget. I read your Easter Island piece and it sounds awesome! Macchu Picchu is on the list and I think Glapagos are out of my price range. I am definately hitting up Rio and Buenos Aires. Patagonia is also on the list. It will be a logitical nightmare but fun!

Definitely get to Patagonia...it's worth the logistical nightmare. Seriously I have been back awhile and need to post my pics; maybe tonight......
It is the number 1 thing I have seen in all of my travelling.
You will love Argentina! Seriously, I already have it all planned out that I am going to marry my host brother and we will have houses in Buenos Aires, the US, and Patagonia, and our children will be bilingual
