Hi and first of all... WELCOME to TPunk!
I'm thinking of going to Australia and New Zealand on a holiday work visa next spring. I've been looking for hostels and stuff and the same hostel chain keeps coming up. It's called base backpackers. I've never stayed there as yet, but it looks good. I believe there's a few of them. I'm sure you'll find out everything you're looking for on here.

New Zealand is big on outdoorsy stuff -- gorgeous scenery, hiking, extreme sports (bungee jumping, etc.). Lots of "Lord of the Rings" tours going around, now, too -- what with folks being taken by the scenery from the movies.
I've always jokingly referred to New Zealand as "Scotland in the South Pacific" for its scenery and sheep (which outnumber the people, if I remember right).
Sorry I can't be more specific as NZ is still on my list of places to go, as I haven't been there yet, myself!

If you are flying into Auckland stay at the Base backpackers cool place with a bar underground cheap too i think around $21NZD for a dorm. In Wellington stay at the Wildlife house i think the name was really cool place with Zebra strips everywhere also around the same money.
If you are going on the Lynx (Interisland ferry) make sure you leave on a early trip as when i got to Picton had to stay in a 80 bed dorm uncool very noisy.
Best places to go are Dunedin (cool uni vibe in a small town) Queenstown (Parties, snow boarding and any sort of extreme sport you can imagine) Bay of Islands (in the summer awesome fun real small town atmosphere)
You will have a great time i love NZ (even though i am Aussie hah hah although the All Blacks suck)
