Ok. Me and a couple of friends are heading over to Europe for 6 weeks over December-January. We're winging it mostly, but have set plans for New Years (Hogmanay in Edinburgh) and a vague idea of where we want to visit (England, Ireland, Scotland, France. I see the teacher's --- wait a minute. So those four and Italy.) Problem is, I'm having attachment issues with Christmas.
It'll be the first Chrissy I spend away from my family, and I want some definite plans - where we're going to be. So what I'd really love are some suggestions. Where's a good place to go? Any great experiences you've had.
I'd love to be in Rome at Christmas - but I think pretty much the whole Catholic population of the world would love to be in Rome at Christmas...and it will be incredibly busy...Thoughts? Been there?
Not in a terrible rush to get this info - but we'll have to start booking accomodation at some stage.
Thanks heaps.

If you're Catholic. what about Assisi? St. Francis was big into Christmas, and the Franciscans do it up big. At our little church in Vilnius last year (I think there are 7 or 9 monks) we had a live donkey and sheep in the vestibule and straw scattered all over the floor of the church. Since the building was desecrated by the Soviets and is still in pretty rough shape, we really got a "first Christmas" feeling.
Germany is also major Christmas land, both the Catholic and Protestant areas. We were in Leipzig in December two years ago, it was quite an experience too. There's a town on the Czech border (Erzegebirge) where they have been making nutcrackers and all the wooden Christmas pyramids etc. for a century plus, it's a madhouse in December, but quite an experience. Czech is also big into Christmas, if you want to head a little further east.
