I was about to change all my dollars into euros but a friend told me I'd need to keep some for the "airport fee". is this new? i know these exist but i always assumed they were included in the ticket price. apparently i'm going to need some canadian cash on a stopover at dorval. anyone else come across this? and if you have, how much is it?

Check the embassy for that country and see. They usually list all airport, entry, exit, and visa fees...if any. Hope this helps.

Another thing foo pointed out to me was that you should keep some native currency on you for on flight drinks/food etc.

So fat I have never paid any extra fees at airports before. All the airport fees are included in the ticket price. Unless something changed recently I don't see what this fee could be. Check out the airport website and read up on all the polices - if there are any extra fees they should be listed there.
TJ has a good point - keep some change and a few smaller bills with you in the native currency for a luggage cart, coffee, sandwich or a a stamp to mail that last post card.

There is an airport fee in Europe, some of the major airlines include it in the price but be careful when it comes to lowfare airlines their known not to include the airport fee to make prices seem cheeper. But the press got up in arms about this here a year or two ago, just cheak the small print.

I got caught out with this when departing the airport in Bangkok. I changed all my Thai Baht to pounds (my next stop was London) and went to enter the boarding area. There was an exit fee/airport tax (whatever you call it) which I had to pay - back to the exchange bureau to get Baht again!
Unfortunately I cant recall how much it was.

The airport fee in Bangkok is 500 Baht (about $12 USD). Yeah - that one can really f*@%k you up if you are unaware of it. Especially if its busy and your trying to get through the crowd of people going from Check-In to Immigration. Why not charge the airlines and have them put it on the ticket cost??
