Just wondering, has anyone ever used the Official Youth Hostels Guide to Europe before? If so, is it worth getting? Or can you do without it? Should I rely on this book to find places to stay or should I do all my hostel research beforehand? I think the guidebook is offered by Hosteling International or something.

I hate Hosteling International and I reccomend staying far far away from their hostels. I've stayed at 3 and each one was worst then the last. It seems like that can't maintain hostels of that size. If the book is a listing of all their hostels I'd buy it for just for toilet paper back up

Keep with independently run hostels. Generally they are up kept a little better & you're likely to have a better time.

I found HI's were geared more towards families then drunken backpackers.

i only stayed in one HI it was a bit strange, ok. i found private ones to be more lively but i recon there must be guides that cover these as well.

yea, I really don't think a guide would be needed.

Hey guys, thanks for all your feedback. I'll be forgoing the guide and spending that money on beer instead.
