Hooray! An arch-conservative spiritual leader for 1.1 billion people the world over. That's not polarizing or anything...

With the weight problem in America (maybe other places, i don't know) maybe a Holocaust officer/Pope is just what we need to loose weight. "McDonald's and Burger King have been excommunicated!!!"
(Yes yes i know for all the history buffs, hitler youths weren't SS officers and they didn't run concentration camps but I kid I Kid I kid with you)

I think it is this pope that Nostradamus predicted would get asassinated. Then muslims are supposed to invade the Vatican or something like that.

A glance at the anguish in the worldwide Anglican communion these days is a cautionary tale for any church that tries to accommodate the opposing views of a widespread and disparate congregation.
Traditional Catholic morality isn't popular today, but is in line with the teachings of the Church for the past 2000 years. There are so many different ideas out there about all aspects of life (and have been over the course of two millenia), if the Church changed with every whim of public opinion, what would be the basis of its moral authority for its people? Catholics believe that the choice of a Pope is inspired by the Holy Spirit, which is the spirit of God, so I guess Catholics should accept that God might have some clue what he needs in a Pope. Pope John Paul II was an unexpected choice, but what an impact he made...
It's amazing the armchair quarterbacking that's already going on about this Papacy, considering it's been less than 24 hours long.

True. But also keep in mind that this is the first pontiff to ascend to the Vatican in the time when information travels at damn near the speed of light!
Here's some speculation, just for kicks. Benedict XVI was, as a Cardinal, supposedly instructed by the Pope to be a hardliner to keep a particular balance in the church. So he may be more toward the middle when it comes to his actual papacy. After all, he didn't choose the "Pious" name, which has traditionally been the monicker of choice for firebrand Popes.
As for the people wondering about the choice of such an old Pope - John Paul II was a relatively young Pope. Not only was his twenty-some years of Papacy his legacy, but the coming decades will be as well, considering all of the highest ranking members of the clergy are "his" men. It was in the college's best interest to elect someone who's reign won't be as lasting. Or so the theory goes...
And while I don't give much of a damn about organized religion, I sincerely hope no one sacks the Vatican or assassinates the Pope. Whatever the spiritual implications may or may not be, the societal impact would be chaotic, at the very least.

Oh I know, I just think it's amazing that people are demanding to know every detail of his outlook on world issues, before he's even had a chance to get his vestments fitted.
You raise some interesting points, also. Certainly all the interviews I've heard (BBC's my only English language source) from people who actually know the man is that he's much more gentle natured than his rep would suggest. Maybe we could give him a couple of, I don't know, days? before judging his Papacy!
It's interesting that the most positive assessments I've heard so far have been from representatives of the Muslim and Jewish faiths...

So would a truly humble person say he was arrogant?
