I found that the difference between phone cards in Europe is pretty amazing, one card will give you a less or more than another card for the same price. If you use a payphone on the street, you loose the amount of talk time on the card, but if you call from a house or hotel/hostel phone, you get more time. When buying a pone card do not be afraid to ask questions about it, and ask to see the spec sheet on the card, the store should have it, and if the can not give you answers, go somewhere that will.
The worst one I got was in Belgium, cost 5E, and I got 14 min of talk time to Canada, what a gip, compared to the card I had before that wich gave me 40 min of talk time from a payphone for the same price!!
So make sure you shop around and look for the best deal for your needs.

there is for sure a huge difference in cards! Ive bought them in London with a 47 minute difference between cards of the same price so I can relate!
Ive also heard lately about this global phone card, Im guessing you can access the system from most countries (must be a big card for all those numbers), anyone used these that could give us the scoop?

The ISIC(International Student Identifiaction Card) card has an option where you can fund your account and use it like a phone card, but the rates aren´t anything to write home happy about. Use it as a backup only.
From Lisbon, Portugal to Madrid, Spain I was paying something outrageous like $2USD per minute!
Talk about a jip!
And try to avoid calling to a cell/mobile phone, if you can. You will not get the best bang for your buck <_< Call to land lines, like home phones, etc...

In Germany get the Median telephone card, you can buy it in the Reise bank almost in every main train station, and in American Express banks.
I think it's the best way to call home... there are different cards by Median, like Americacard or Call home or something like that... anyways you get a better price if you buy the call america card if you are calling to USA than getting a call china. lol
I'm not sure about rates... but I used to call to Mexico for about 80minutes with 10 euros
