There is a group of men who steal people's shit on the trains in Paris to an from the airport. Last winter I had my purse on me and a tote bag next to me. The moment I let go of it, a dude jumped from behind grabbed it and ran off at the speed of light. Fortunately all he got were my level 1 french textbooks, a bunch of make up, toiletries and listerine. The police say they have been a reocurring problem. Just yesterday a friend phoned me and said the same thing happened, except they got her wallet and passport.
So, if you're flying into Paris or taking the train to the burbs, hold on to your stuff.

This is pretty common on the RER trains, especially as you roll through the suburbs If you get on at the right time, you can see multiple bastards in the car, sizing up the passengers and their belongings. One of the common stops is Chatelet-Les Halles train station, which is full of hoodlums waiting to make a little bank off of RER passengers - watch your stuff!

The same rules follow in Paris as they do on other trains and metros - Keep your handbag/daypack strapped on and in front of you, and if it fits, keep your luggage in front of you, between your legs. A good example of this is in Barcelona, where even all the locals hold on to their shit for dear life!
