Alright, so I'm going to Belize and surrounding countries for a couple of years and the organization that I am going over there with gave me a list of the shots I need, most of which I already have. After the list of shots they said:
Quote:
you can also bring some cipro just in case.

So I'm thinking, what the hell is cipro, and do I really need it? When I looked it up on the web I I got a whole shmeel of crap about defense against anthrax...and I'm thinking
I really hate taking medication , especially unnecessarily. Anybody know about this stuff?

Thanks zylah! I talked to my nurse friend of mine and she said that cipro is used for an antibiotic for many other things as well and they probably just want me to bring some with me in case I need it later on. I'm going to check more into it though...

Any antibiotic will do.. Cipro's just a name brand marketed by Bayer, that for some reason got all the publicity during the anthrax scare. Find out from your doc which one is best for you. (Personally, while I avoid antibiotics unless absolutely necessary, I like Augmentin)

Yeah, I think asking my md for a good antibotic to bring along sounds like good advice. I think thats what I will do.

Just to add a bit from my years as a Microbiologist - Cipro is one of the "big guns" antibiotics. Kills gram negative and gram positive and most resistant organisms (bacterial). Just a good thing to have with "in Case".

Thanks. Yeah I found out that they wanted me to bring it 'just in case'. So I did, thanks for the info.
