As the title suggest, what made it possible, and I dont mean the jet engine or the boat.
I was in a good job as a time served engineer at Rolls Royce, but mass redundency forced me and alot of others out the company so it made it possible (with redundency) for me to fund my travels and have time!
Anyone else got a real sad tear jerking story like that? LOL

All I did was leave my girlfriend, move out of our apartment and back in with my parents but hey now I have been to New York, Denver, and New Orleans all within 5 months. Now if I could just save some more money to get to London.

i work as a secretary on a moderate salary and i just save all my money (save the money i spend for weed and steak/rack of lamb dinners), and then i ask my employers for 3-weeks off at a pop, twice a year. then i get my ass going and enjoy the hell out of it! if my boyfriend is there and we can have sex during the whole trip that's a fine bonus too - not happening this month, but in march it is! woot!

poor no-edit- button joanie. lol
I pretty much do the same thing as she does, only I take about 1 trip per year (so far) and haven't dragged any boyfriends with me. haha
A lot of people were surprised when I said I was taking 5 weeks off to travel, and their general sentiment was "well, enjoy this trip while you can because it's an opportunity of a lifetime, you'll never get another one like it." I disagree, I see no reason why I can't take another 5-week or even longer trip. But for many people, their professional lives override almost everything else so it's hard for them to even think about something like that except in terms of how "lucky" I must be. Fooey. It's not luck, it's hard work and sheer determination. B)

(Rant time...)
ok ...so I'm the total dork here then...
All I do is work work work
then wushu...and more wushu...
then I am *priviledged* to take a two week vaca - not to be combined together, mind you - to a faraway place.
So besides my holiday faraway escapades, I cherish my weekends....
Moi current plans to SE Asia is now in jeopardy, no thanks to that total dork new boss fvckface.....

This isn't a tootin-my-own-horn type of thing, but one strategy to ensure you can travel a lot is to make yourself indispensable at work. Get your hands into enough projects/areas that your (unplanned) absence would be a serious pain. Get to the point that for no matter how long you left, they'd always want you back.
Luckily, I work for a small company, and this is possible. My co-worker just came back from a month and a half in Alaska, knowing there's no way we'd replace him. I just came back from 2 weeks in Europe, although I only had just over a week of vacation time.
When I got back, I joked, "Man, next time I go to Europe, I'm buying a one way ticket, and if you guys really want me back, you can buy the return." The response? "Don't count on a long vacation..." Gah!
Seriously, make your plans, set your priorities, and hope you're as valuable to your employer as your travel time is valuable to you. After all, you work to LIVE, not the other way around. If that's not the case, then it might be time to start job surfing

I work for a small graphic firm, and do freelance work for several media sites. I make very good money for my age. I attend college full time. and take money from work and the bank ( savings ) for a trip. I will try to take 3 trips during my 4 years in college. 1 which will be a backpacking adventure.

How the world turns... Well I work for the largest entertainment company in the world.. I'm not gonna name names, but it rhymes with Bizney I just told my boss about a month ago that I wanted to go to Europe for about a month.. it just so happens that the time that I want to go is a busy time for me at work. I have to travel a bit for my jobbie job. My flight leaves for Europe on October 28th till Nov 22nd. However, I will be going to Houston, TX for work from Oct 10th – 17th .. then I get back to Florida, and I have to go to Vero Beach for work from Oct 17th – Oct 24th … AND!! I just found out that I have to go on a recruiting trip at the end of September (don’t know location yet) for a week.. So with my vacation and travel I will be out of the office from Mid September until almost the first of December.. THANK GOD I have already purchased my ticket and got it approved before all this stuff happened.. They are not very happy, and I had to commit to checking my email in Europe at least every 48 hours, and when I get back I don’t even want to think about all the work I will have to catch up on.. but I think it will be all worth it… The Madness I tell you... The Madness
