I have stayed at Flying Pig and Wombats. Flying Pig is a great place to stay if you like to smoke. The setup in the lounge is very cool as they have a huge chill out area. There is also a bar and free internet. I have heard problems about the cleanliness, but I thought my room was fine. One problem I had was they had an unadvertised lockout for cleaning when I arrived, which they don't have everyday, so I was not able to check in to my room for about five hours. If you don't smoke though, I would not suggest this place. The other hostel I have stayed at on the list is Wombat's. This place would rank right up near the top of my favorite hostels. Clean rooms, comfortable beds, good showers and a nice bar. If you are going to any of the other cities listed, like Barcelona, I could give you some more hostel advice, because I don't really think those are a fair representation of the top hostels in Europe.

For Barcelona I would suggest Backpackers BCN. It is a small hostel where you will probably end up knowing everyone who stays there by the end of one day, so it is a good place to meet others. The location is also nice. It is near a metro and also walking distance (5 minutes) to the main street in the town. The hostel fills up very fast though, so book ahead.

I stayed at the Hostel Alessandro Downtown in Rome and I really didn't like it. It was probably the worst place I stayed during my three weeks abroad. The staff aren't very organized, if you come in late you have to pay cash and the facilities just aren't worth it. My recommendation is stear clear of that one.
