today is the 6th of june 2004, 60 years since veterans from our home countries landed at Sword beach, Juno, Gold, Utah and Omaha,
"they died so that we may live..."
we are truly in debt to those men and woman, who landed, planned, executed reconnocence and the resistance and those who fought and died.
happy D-day every one

This is very interesting...
...first of all, I am by no means a war historian nor am I a war buff of any kind, but yesterday my friends persuaded me to tag along on a day trip to Reading PA, which is about a 90 minute drive from my place.
What's interesting was that there was this re-enactment of WWII that this place apparently stages every year, but being that yesterday was the 60th anniversary, it was a bigger than usual event.
There were also all kinds of antique WWII war planes and other military paraphenalia; men & women were not only dressed in soldier's ourfits but also of French peasants and resistance groups. It was a pretty grand display and thoroughly organized.
At the begining I felt very detached from all of this war stuff but after a few strolls around the area, I got comfortable and took some photos of the scences around me. In the end it was all kind of unique in a nostaigic way.
So, it turned out to be a very nice time spent.
I got to meet and talk to a few older folks and they were all brimming about their past escapades.
Maybe I will post the pictures soon....

Curses, I saw this post a day late.
I always get a little knot in my throat when I think about this day. I'm hoping to see these beaches in July.
It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Here are the pictures of D-Day 60th anniversay at Reading, Pennsylvania.
I made it a point to not take any pictures of warplanes or weapons (just a stage I'm in right now...) but instead *stalked* out the people in their very elegant costumes. It was damn difficult to take the shots with so many "ordinarily dressed" people walking around. Some shots I got lucky and just snapped away; others I had to wait patiently until the right moment....aah, now I remember why photography can be quite a pain in the a@#......
The pictures were scanned by a photo shop and they didin't quite do a very good digital conversion...so bear with the grainish results...

Well Eamon, the folks I spoke with were mostly WWII vets and their stories were mostly like" I flew that plane..." and "I shot down 5 Japs..." and " dont you just love the music they're playing here...(referring to the big band era of music that the loudspeakers were blaring all day)."
There was also this German "ace" pilot there; don't remember his name.
There was also the pilot of the Enola Gay there.....
They are all very nice people indeed. It's just that they just have a very storied warfare life waaaay back in the fourties....
