i came back from a trip to europe for 3 months in mid march and im already planning my trip to australia in december. the problem is i want to do this for a living, i mean i want to just travel and backpack everywhere and just live life, but on the other hand i have a fiscally responsible life where im in school and have a really good job to go along with my major. should i drop it all so i can go live life in other countries the rest of my life or should i become a victim of production and consumption and just fall in line. please help.

zylah has the right Idea, but it does not have to be a bokk about travel advise, there is a market for travel experiences out there, our local book store has them. Just find something that people want , and give it to them...you would have to speak to a lawyer who knows about copyrights law and stuff like that...you might even be able to get a grant fromthe goverment...so do your research.

Ya i'm a little like that too.I'm scared shitless of becoming some boring person who's life is about work.Besides writing a book some other jobs which you can travel are Photography,Airline Pilot , Flight Attendant and there's lots of jobs around the world you could work at without having to commit to working for a long time.
**Cheers**

I'm on the same boat. I think many of us would like a job that has exciting travel as an integral part of it.
One thing that I'd like to offer, or hope, is that traveling and living a fiscally responsible life don't have to be mutually exclusive. Maybe timing, creativity and some reasonable risk-taking is part of it, but I sure hope that I can meet both these needs somewhere in between!
In my prior career in management consulting, travel was an integral part of it. There were times when I travelled 100% and literally lived out of a suitcase. At first it was exciting b/c I was really green just out of college. But it didn't take long for me to realize that corporate business travel wasn't really for me, b/c it didn't give me the time to enjoy the places I traveled to, it was extremely demanding, and I was getting burned out and my quality of life was actually going down despite of the travel.
So my point is, when looking for a career that marries travel at some level, consider seriously the "type" of travel you desire, maybe you want to marry travel with travel writing, travel with travel photography, travel with international cooking, whatever, but just don't look at the technicality or statistic of travel, look for and attempt to achieve the "quality" of travel you desire.

i'm just saying, i've given up on that dream travel job. those types of niches are so hard to find, especially in this day and age. i've just resigned myself to slaving away and begging for my 5 weeks a year. fuck it.

I find one of the greatest things about traveling is the anticipation of going somewhere new. Slaving through work and school but remembering that ill be in Europe in the summer gets me by each day.

I say ride with the feeling as long as you can. Do what Dio is doing in Australia -- find a job, work some, travel some. Keep working your way across the planet until you grow tired. If you never do, then congratulations! You've lived a life that many can only dream of...if not, and you grow tired after a few years, a decade, whatever, you will always look back on that time fondly. It will have made you what you are.
There's only a few Rick Steves and such who get paid to travel and sightsee and meet people. By all means, attempt to find a niche...writing, whatever, but hey, there's nothing wrong with settling down in London for a stretch, being a bartender. Or working on a kibbutz in Israel for six months. There are manual labor, migrant worker, service type jobs out there for travelers.
Good luck, and keep us posted...

anyone know how I can travel the world year round and still work as an automotive design engineer?.........i doubt it
Looks like I'll have to put in my time behind a desk or else change my profession (not likely)

Trade shows? How about having to go to emerging markets to see what specific design requirements they have... I'm stretching here, but there must be some way...
Good luck!
