yeah i mean, i could do a little more here and there you know, but if i delete the cost of living (i.e. hostels) or limit myself to like 5 nights at hostels, then cut down the cost of food... i don't know it'll prove to be interesting!

A while ago someone (sorry, I forget who it was) posted a link to Help Exchange, (<---yep, that's a link), where you can find listings of farms willing to let you stay for free in exchange for doing a little work on the farm. Many of them are for at least 1-2 weeks, and I've seen a few that were veg-only farms. Maybe if you get stuck, you can check out something like this?

Also, I'd think you'd be able to find a halfway decent squat here and there, since you're travelling during the summer. Ask around at hostels, and maybe internet cafes. You could also try sleeping in parks. Obviously, be very careful, especially in large cities.

As far as hostels go, many times they have listings boards where you might be able to find temp work for a few days, maybe even in the hostel itself. Or you could offer to do some work around the hostel in exchange for a free night.

Good luck!

check out www.globalfreeloaders.com!!!!!!!!
I am going abroad in 3 weeks and have lodging secured in Paris for the first couple nights. It's supposed to be completely free, but the girl I am staying with is asking for $10/night, which is nothing considering it's Paris, and she's from Finland so I'll get more culture, and we'll get to hang out and I'll have my own personal tour guide in a sense....but supposedly people have stayed with natives all over the world for free.....I hope to do it all throughout Spain too. What an awesome concept for travelers on a budget!

Great points Kassandra!

subdevotion - you definitely have a challenge. 20/day in high season can be specially challenging... but if you're willing to camp, tough it out, etc., I don't see why you can't give it a try!

also, you can meet nice natives and they may invite you to their homes once you describe your situation, just be cautious, and also be sure to be respectful so as to give us backpackers a good rep!

I'm vegetarian too and pretty much vegan most times. They sell soymilk in most grocery stores. Most street food in Europe is pretty nutritious. Travel around with nuts, a loaf of bread, crackers, some light fruit, take some Emergen-C with you, drink lots of water, but don't forget to have something of substance once a day, we don't want you getting sick or fatigued, especially since you'll be walking a whole lot to save on that public transportation money once within a city...

Try hitchhiking, but again, be cautious!

Good luck!

Don't forget to factor in the devaluation of the dollar into your budget..For my 3 month trip it's cost me $1000...sorry, it sucks

jw-

Can you break down the 1000 dollars? Were you careful with food, stay in hostels, splurge on drinks? I guess I am asking for more information. I was hoping to be in Europe for as long as possible... I will have $5000. How long do you think that will last?

delaney, what he means is that the current crappy exchange rate will cause him to lose about 1000 on his overall budget. I responded to your question over in the other topic-- 5000 will probably get you about 3 months, if you're really careful.

Ah SV, thanks for the clarification! I misunderstood the post. You have provided good advice on the other topic too!
