I'm planning on booking hostels as I go along on my first backpacking trip this May/June so I can be flexible. However, I was wondering what you experienced travellers can suggest regarding this possible dilemma:

Let's say I'm leaving London in 2 days and I go to an Internet cafe and find a hostel in Paris that looks pretty good. If I know I want to stay in Paris for at least 4 nights, should I book all 4 nights at this hostel online? What if it sucks, am I likely going to be stuck there?

How do you guys usually go about this? Is it a better idea to just book 1-2 nights in advance and then try to get 2 additional nights once I'm there (if I like the place)?

Thanks.

I think you've got it bang on. I'd only book 2 nights out of the 4.

That way you have the option to change hostels if you hook up with someone ( ) or a group of people.

Also if the hostel sucks you aren't doomed to stay there for the 4 days. (most hostels require 24 hrs notice for cancellation)
