I just came back from a trip across France with a budget van rented from Origin Campervan.
I can only recommend this experience.
We've visited and spent nights in so many locations.
We found that it was the most affordable way to travel if you don't want to get stuck to city centers.
It combines accomodation, transportation and cooking.
Yet, it is more pratical and cheaper than renting a satndard motorhome.

The depot location is quite handy if you come from London or Paris.
Probably spam but having looked into this in Ireland to go to one of the local festivals that price isn't to bad. I think I was looking at €1000 minimum to rent one here in Ireland.
Things kind of vans would be used at music festivals so I don't know what state they'd be in. I ended up giving up on the idea because it was too expensive.

The van we had was in good state as it was almost new.
I don't know for the rest of the fleet but I believe that it is quite recent too.
