Back on the boards
Hi folks,
I have been away from Travelpunk for a long, long time. Some of you that have been on the boards for years may remember me. Although I wasn't in at the beginning of Travelpunk's existence, I was a loyal supporter for a number of years.
A little about myself: I am 47 years old and recently retired from USAirways. I start my second career this fall as a middle school Social Studies teacher. That is actually what took me away from TP -- I've been working full time and going to school full time to get my teaching certificate. I finished my student teaching in May and was hired by a local school district two weeks ago. I'm excited about beginning a new phase of my life.
Travel-wise, this should work out great, too. I will have flight benefits from the airline for the rest of my life, and 2-3 months off each summer as a teacher to enjoy them! I'm not sure if I'll be going anywhere THIS summer, yet...though I have the itch. The last international trip I took was in February 2009 to Mali. You can read my account of it, along with all of my other trips, on my travel website: www.worldwidemike.com
Anyway, I'm glad to be back on the boards and look forward to meeting all the new folks!

Mike, whenever I tell people about you getting free flights for the rest of your life and summers off as a teacher, I hear the same things ranging from awe to extreme jealousy (Gerard says: that lucky bastard!). Though, I know that you worked hard for it and it's definitely a lot more than just luck. Congratulations on the job offer! And hopefully this mean we'll see you around a lot more!

Tpunk has indeed been missing you! But due to the power of FB, I knew why you hadnt been around!! Congrats on everything as always!! And get back out there with those free flights that I still really, truely, deeply, painfully, envy you for!!! Oh, and if things time out right, I will be back in Nica by next summer after many months in Guat and El Saly, and since thats the only C.A. country you havent been too... ummmm....

Welcome back Mike! One of my favorite teachers in 9th grade taught world history. He had traveled a lot and used to share his travel experiences with the class. He is one of the people who got me interested in travel.
I'm sure you'll inspire some kids to pick up a backpack when they get a bit older.

Thanks, Tone, and everyone else! And yes, I do fly free on USAirways as a retiree. Great combo with the teaching gig!
And I will indeed be trying to recruit the next generation of backpackers during my classes...!

oh man, what a deadly combination. airline retiree and school teacher. TONS of time to travel and with your usairways benefits it should work out quite nicely. VERY jealous right now. and also, welcome back mike. this place just isn't the same without your epicness.
