Default Staying in touch while backpacking

Going on a backpacking trip overseas in a couple of months and need some way to stay in touch with family/friends back home in the US. Any suggestions? Prefer to use text messaging so any known cheap text messaging services would be helpful! thanks!!!

In my opinion the best way is Skype. You can call any other Skype for free and you can call a phone in the States for 2 cents a minute. You can find Skype in almost any internet cafe.

If you want to text friends and family, have them text your email and then you can respond to their phone via your email.

For example we have T Mobile so I emailed my mom's phone (her 10 digit number@tmomail.net) and she received it on her phone like a text message. You get the idea!

Thumbs up

Have you heard much about Chime? You get a US phone number to text from your mobile or computer. Its free, for now atleast, and you can text to friends in the US without racking up international charges cuz your using a US phone number. You sign up at Chime Now and they set up your account for you. Hope that helps

Google Voice! It's totally the way to go.
www.google.com/voice

You get a free phone number that will forward to any number you want or just take your voicemails and has something very similar to gmail set up to respond to voicemail and sms

It's brilliant

Google Voice is nice but you can't actually place calls with it. I have Google Voice forward to my Skype number, which is a good combo for me.
