Smile english programs/universities in europe

I am a high school Junior and I am extremely interested in attending university in Europe. I am fluent in French and English. I want a University that has programs/ has all instruction in English. So far I have found Franklin College in Switzerland and a handful in the UK.

I am mainly interested in Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, France, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Belgium...however any suggestions are welcomed.

Also I am looking for a school that is not too hard to get into...I have a 1700 SAT score, a 3.07 GPA in all AP classes, and a plethora of extra curricular activities.

I am interested in International Affairs and English Lit

thanks

hmm, well I'm not sure how much you'll be able to find in those countries where they speak only English. Is there a reason you don't want to learn in another leanguage (especially French if you already are fluent?)?

And welcome to tpunk!

I can't tell you the names of the universities specifically, but I have heard that a lot of universities in Norway and Sweden teach in English. Also, my friend just got back from an exchange in Rome, and her course was in English.
sorry if that's a bit vague!
If you don't mind I'm going to move this to the study abroad forum..

What is your main priority? If you are fluent in French and wanting to attend a European university then this would be your best bet.

Most important question: WHAT do you want to study???

Going to university in Europe is not like going to uni in the US. You do not go in without a degree path chosen. And, university is not considered a 'right ' like most Americans kids think it is. The school system in France, Germany, etc separates students into different schools by the time they are 11 or 12 years old. Then, some choose university, some choose technical schools, etc.

Also, the Bachelors/Masters system has only been recently introduced to most EU countries, so reading the websites are confusing. Also, in the UK, Bachelor's take only 3 years to complete. There are no such things as 'Gen Ed requirements' in Europe, so you won't get to take the fun 'Philosophy of Self' course, or whatever, that means you get to watch movies all semester.

As someone who has gotten her M.A. in England for not all the right reasons (including the chance to live abroad), it is something you really need to consider before sinking a lot of time and money into. Also, if you are studying in a foreign country and not just studying abroad, you will have to learn the language at some point!

Here is a good website for Germany: DAAD.de
It has a list of courses that are/partly in English. Maybe other countries have it too.

But again, what do you plan on studying?

Just realized you want English lit or International affairs! oops! anyway, I looked at Franklin college. Never heard of it and it's 41 grand a year!!! wow, I mean, that's a lot just to be in another country for a liberal arts degree. Also, there are less than 500 student?! Essentially it's a tiny liberal arts COLLEGE (so no real research facilities) in Switzerland.

I would, instead, choose a public university of whatever country you end up in. Germany is like 200-500 euros a semester.

Also, can't your high school college counselor help out on this? They should be able to have some info I would think!

Good luck!

That is so cheap compared to most public schools in Texas.

astro has a great post. As someone who has studied in both the US and in Europe, I would much rather do my degree in the US. There is a different atmosphere/experience. But definitely do a year or semester study abroad. Try to take some time off to save $ and travel if you can for that intl experience.

I agree with astro about checking out what resources your high school has... although my school had a terrible careers counsellor so I can understand if they aren't very helpful. Do you know anyone at university now? a sibling/friend etc? because universities usually have really good resources about exchange programs and studying abroad that are often only accessible to students - so maybe you need to befriend someone and get them to help you do some research.

That's definitely a good idea! Plus, I think most universities in the US now think that studying abroad is a selling point in getting students to choose their school. If you look online at most university websites or get in contact with their admissions people, they will probably gladly show you the schools they have exchanges with! Also, there's this website that you can browse through: Study Abroad & Study Abroad Summer, Internship, Language & Scholarship Programs - StudyAbroad.com

I definitely think studying abroad for a semester or year is the better way to go unless you are positively sure you want to do it all in a foreign country.

Good luck!
