[color=green]Hey there. I'm a first time backpacker with a handy mini-tent and no money. (I'm in college, which as we all know is bad enough for the financial state in general, plus the dean of arts & sciences totally mugged me and stole my wallet).
I am planning on spending several weeks getting to know the Italian countryside. I hear there are camping sites all over, but what if I don't make it to one? Or, say, am just in ultra $$$ conservation mode... Do any of you guys have any tips on free camping? (or whatever your particular euphemism for it is). Especially in Italy/ Ireland.
This much I've gathered: Exercise incredible stealth. Luckily, I am a ninja with a torch!
Any other tips on avoiding stavation and incarceration and other unpleasant things, especially those that end in 'ation' would make me all happy & stuff.

You may want to budget for mixing in a hostel stay every few days or so. Sleeping under the stars is cool for a few nights, sleeping with the bugs every evening gets old...at least for me.
It's nice to sleep in a real bed and take a real shower -- feel human again.

Yeah, I imagine you're right. Even though it is my life's ambition to live in a tree...

Elmystico,
Stealth...thats what it's all about...and staying out of city centers and parks and stuff like that. For undercover camping you have to go where the wild things are, and practice some camo techniques, wait till after dark to bed down and be up before day break. Can be done, but do you have the discipline? True question, only way to avoid getting busted is not to be seen. Have done it myself, even here in L.A., but you have to be on top of the game, bro. Wicked fun though.
