Good Hotels for my 3rd internship! Help Please - TravelPUNK Backpacker College Student Budget Travel Message Boards!

Hello!

I need help in some questions that are associated with hotels,and i know that in this forum are many people that stayed in very good hotels or have experience in this area, and i like hear you.

I´m in 3rd year of a Hotel Management course and every years I have a internship.

In 1st year I was in Tivoli Marinotel (Vilamoura - Portugal). I liked , i think taht is a very good hotel, and was very good for me.

In 2nd year I was in Hilton Vilamoura - Algarve - Portugal.

This year i will have another internship, and i need to choose and to send my Curriculum Vitae to some hotels.

This year i will have a management training and i want to have this internship in a foreign countries and i want choose a good hotel to have this internship, and if possible to train my English. I think that England it´s a good country, but as we know the world it´s very big and for this reason i decided create this topic to ask you to help me...

I´m waiting for a lot of suggestions

I can only assume that your home country is Portugal? Why England and not Canada, Australia, USA, or one of the other english speaking countries? What languages are you fluent?

Welcome to Hotel Management. Lot of work, but a great job. (Descent pay and free apartment!)

I manage hotels here in the USA.

You might want to check Accor out. They are world wide and have several brands... like Sofitel, Ibis, Novotel, Etap, Motel 6, Studio 6, Formula 1 and few others.

The beauty of it is, you can use your employee discount the world over!

I´m Portuguese and I had my internships in Portugal, but now, i want make my 3rd internship in a foreign country! I need to practise my English to can be like my firs language, because in the future i want to make a Master programme, in Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne ! This master is everything in english...

At this moment, i can speak Portuguese, English (i think that is good! Not Perfect or excelent but i think that it´s good), and a little bit of Spanish.

I can consider another countries! But i´m 20 years old and i think that it´s better for me be in the Europe than to go to USA, Canada or Australia?

If i have any problem and if i am in the London, i can do Portugal more times than if i go to a more distance country or ...do you desagree?

Where do you think that i have more chances to have a good internship with a good condictions? I will go to this internship with some ideas as keep work (if possible) in the hotel of internship...

I want to know all your ideas , comments and suggestions! A lot if possible :D

What type of hotels do you manage in USA? I have the ideia that USA it´s very confusing and a little bit dangerous for a person with a 20 years old...isn´t it?

What are for you the best countries and the best hotel chains to have a good internship, with a good conditions and with a possibilitie to keep working in the hotel that you had the internship?

I thinks there a little bit of a language barrier... but as I understand it you want to know what kind of hotels I manage and if the USA is dangerous for a 20 year old?

Well, to answer first... I have mostly managed Economy hotels. These are usually geard toward the budget concious traveller and there are literaly thousands. I prefer these hotels because I love to travel and there are more... Motel 6's than there are Hiltons.

As you might have guessed, right now I am a GM of a Motel 6 in South Florida. Motel 6 is owned by accor hotels... the french on this board will know them I'm sure. Unlike Whyndham Hotels and Choice Hotels, Motel 6 has a corporate heavy ownership... Meaning that almost every Whyndam hotel and Choice Hotel are either owned by families or ownership groups. They are franchised.

However, Motel 6 is all corporate. Accor has hotels that range from Economy (Motel 6) to super Luxury (Sofitel and Novitel) and everything in between. PLUS my corporate discount works at any Accor hotel world wide!

So, you might want to look into them.

As for the US being safe, dont worry. You'll be just fine.

Why is the USA (or Australia/Canada) confusing if you can understand english? I do not mean the small things like tipping the waiter at a restuarant (different in Europe).

The USA is not a country to worry about concerning violence. This assumes that you do not put yourself in a bad place. Would you think it would be wise to go to bad places in Portugal? I do not think England would be any safer then most places in the USA.

Why are you in this business? Travel, fun, money...

If you want to be in the hotel business, it's a good idea to intern somewhere known for high service standards. I work for three hotels-- a Marriott, a Westin and a smaller boutique hotel. I would definitely recommend either the Marriott or Westin/Sheraton/W (Starwood) brands-- they're world-wide and their service is exceptional.

And the employee discount is amazing, I can personally attest!

I only have experience in one type of tourism and it´s related to the Sun,beach and sea Tourism... Í never experienced business tourism and but i preview that can be little different...

Some people advice me to try Marriott or Westin/Sheraton/W or Accor, but do you think that i have chance to have a internship in one of these group of hotels?

Other question: the minimum period for a hotel management training in most hotels are 6 months, isn´t it?

I´m trying to find the better option to find a good hotel for me and for my internship, and i think that the better option can be go to the sites of principal hotel chains, and send my CV by mail and wait for a answer... and in the end, see what are can be better for me...

Do you think that is a good way?

I honestly don't know how easy it's going to be for you, but I will say that if you don't try you have absolutely 0% chance of success. You have to TRY first to get anywhere.

I don't know how long the training is as I don't know anything about hotel management courses.

I think you will have a MUCH higher chance of success if you send your CV to specific hotels rather than someone at a corporate office. All hiring and HR work is done at each hotel, not by the parent company.

Do some research, figure out the general area where you want to go, research the high-end hotels in the area and start sending out your information. It may help to start out with your research in a broad area: such as, a country rather than a specific city. After you get to that point then you can start getting specific: if you already have experience with sun and beaches, it may be a good idea to diversify a bit and pick a large city with varied culture: London, Paris, New York City, Istanbul, Tokyo, wherever. Once you start thinking in terms of geography, finding a hotel becomes a bit easier.

Hell no I don't manage a Hotel, nor would I ever want too. I am employeed by a resort though... as their horticulturalist :D. I do have some knowledge of the field though, but not so much as to know who the leaders of the industry are. ?Por que?
