Default Hi. I'm Dan from San Fran. Going to Europe soon!

Hello!

I'm Dan from San Francisco. I had a great time backpacking Southeast Asia last year for 6 weeks (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand). And now I'm getting ready for my 3-month trip to Europe starting September 11 in Paris.

I don't know for sure, but this is my IDEA of my route:

Paris
Amsterdam
Copenhagen OR Stockholm
Berlin
Switzerland -- Basel & Gimmelwald
Czech & Slovakia
Maybe Vienna
then ... somewhere warm!!

I'm going to try and keep things cheap by couchsurfing. Also I do a body massage that's synchronized with the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon. I hope I can sell that to a few people a make some extra money.
Looking forward to reading the forums and chatting with some people.

Looking forward to reading the forums and chatting. Any tips on where to go? Email me!

Welcome! Out of all of those places, I've been to Paris, Berlin, and Gimmelwald, so if you have any questions, you can either post here or pm me. If I can give one tip, plan to spend at least a week in Gimmelwald. It's a nice break from all of the big cities and you get to meet some awesome people there and do tons of hikes.

I definitely need to make it to Southeast Asia sometime soon, I'm sure you can share some great advice with other people looking at doing a trip in those countries.

I also suggest Poland and Hungary. For someplace warm, how about Montenegro? I spent something like 7 days at a real nice hostel called "The Hippo Hostel"

You can book it here and read my review here.

Oh yeah, and welcome to the boards

Yeah whats up with the massage? The clocks at the start of Time always put me on edge. How does that work into your technique?

Hey all! Thanks for the tips and the welcomes. This forum is more active than I thought.

A week in Gimmelwald -- sounds like a good plan. I just hope it's not too cold when I'm there (mid October). Well at least I won't have to spend 15 minutes putting on sunblock every day.

I'll definitely look into Poland and Hungary. In fact I met a Polish backpacker just last night and asked him if he recommended going to his country. His answer "Do I recommend you visit the best country in the world? Yes."

Hippo Hostel sounds rad. Do you think the weather there would be bearable in late October? If yeah, I guess I should book sooon.

Yeah I'm still working on the transitions for the Dark Side massage! That clocks part is hard to work with. Generally at that point I'm just putting oil/lotion on the person. Haha..

Oh yeah ------- any questions about SE Asia, let me know! My favorite country was Laos (beautiful and mellow). Coolest people = Cambodia. Most overrated = Thailand. But if you want to party your ass off, Thailand is probably your only real option. Also -- do not miss Vietnam.

I'm sure you heard about Gimmelwald from Rick Steves, so I'm going to assume you are planning on staying at the mountain hostel. I double checked, and they will definitely be open mid-October. They close around the end of November and Petra (the owner) rents it out to large groups.

I never hiked a lot before Gimmelwald, but I had an amazing time going around and seeing all that the alps had to offer. My days consisted of waking up early, hiking, coming back and eating a huge dinner, drinking with some new friends, and capping off the night in the wood burning hot tub! It was totally the highlight of my trip.

Rad! Thanks for the info. I can definitely see how you wouldn't want to leave that hostel. I worship hot tubs. I wonder how often people end up in/around the hot tub, late at night, naked, contemplating doing snow angels.
