Default not-quite-around-the-world help with flights!

This is what i am going to do:

fly from vancouver to guatemala, travel throughout central america and south america for about a year, fly to auckland and work somewhere in nz for like 6 months, go to australia, then india, then england where i am going to stay for a couple years and work.

around the world flights are only good for like a year and would require me to end up back in vancouver.

is there a better way of doing this or am i just going to be stuck paying thousands of dollars for my flights?

OR, would it be bad to purchase an around the world ticket and just not catch the flight meant to take me back home.

I think your last option might be the best one, unless you can find one way tickets that don't cost an arm and leg.

Maybe you could try to find how much a rtw ticket costs from South America via Australia, India and England, and not use the last leg (England-home). Some interesting price could come up from this idea. You'd only need to buy a one-way ticket to Central America, which isn't very expensive anyway.

Hope this has helped !

Don't RTW tickets have a time limit (I thought I remember that OneWorld had a 12 months limit for example)? With an itinerary as long as yours you'd need to check on this carefully.

Yes, as you said they usually have a 12-month limit. That is why my suggestion was to buy the rtw ticket at the end of his year in central/south america, from there.

you can get flights to the Uk with a stop over from australia for about $1800 AUD normally, but i dont know if any of those flights go thru india.

why not just buy loads of smaller flights? thats what im doing this year and its worked out to be way cheaper. find the super low budget airlines, get creative too, if you have the time to jiggle routes and dates its easy to pick up some amazing deals.
