Hello
Hello All. Found this site while researching backpacking in Europe. My wife and I are visiting Europe from July 2nd through the 18th. We're hitting Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. We decided to rent a car and drive through. I was hoping to get some info on where to stay and sites to see. Look forward to talking!

Welcome to Tpunk! I have never done Europe by car, but I would suggest trying to see some smaller towns and scenic drives. Rick Steves.com prob has some good suggestions. He has good tips for everyone, but really has good info for people old enough to rent a car. I bet Provence in southern France would be gorgeous to drive thru.
Are you guys planning on getting private rooms, or looking to stay in hostels?

Hey and welcome!!! You two have balls, I don't think I would want the nightmare of driving through 4 or more countries!!! Can't wait to hear it. My bro n law just got back from a business trip in northern europe. His company supplied the rental car. He travels all over the states by car, and didn't enjoy trying to navigate his way around while over there....
So what cities are you hitting in Italy and France?

We're going to fly into Frankfurt and pick up our car. then head to Paris, Normandy, Bordeaux, down to Pamplona for the running of the bulls, over to Barcelona, then maybe the French Riviera if we can something we can afford... if not, we'll either head into switzerland or italy and hit Milan... not sure yet, then back to frankfurt. We're still checking on Hostels and cheap hotels.
Anyway, we know the driving will be a huge adventure... but we have always dreamed of doing the less touristy stuff. Roadside cafes and the such. Just stopping wherever we feel like and not having much of an agenda except where we have to meet a couple people. Any advice would be appreciated though! We are really having a tough time finding anything affordable in the french riviera region... any suggestions?

You should look at the newest Rick Steves French Riviera or Rick Steves France guide (he updates yearly). You might be able to find something beyond a hostel at a decent price. And if you mention the guidebook they might honor the price in it if its listed in dollars, bc the dollar has of course gone down since it was published.
