NY Times did an article on the top 53 (random number lol) places to go in 2008, so if you're thinking of going somewhere and need some inspiration check out this article.

Do I get double points for having lived in 3 of 'em? (San Francisco, Iran, London)

I really wish I wouldn't have misspelled "places" in the title of this thread. I suppose that makes me a "spelltard"

does anyone else notice that these lists always seem to be catered to a wealthier crowd than your average backpacker? i mean, i know they are all great places with plenty of accommodation for all types, but that resort where apartments cost millions? yeah, thats awesome for bill gates but what about me?
sorry to be a downer, but these lists from the news/media places like the NYtimes are all the same and, like the news they report, are mostly crafted by the corporations.

yeah I get that impression too, it's like reading travel & leisure or something. but I think every destination can be made into fun for budget travelers/backpackers as well, which is why I put it up there. I'm going to Prague and Munich this summer (both on the list) and I am certainly not traveling like I am miss money bags (cos I am not!). but I agree with you, these things are usually geared toward the wealthier folks.

Haha, I've only been to two places on that list (Munich, Buenos Aires). I've got a lot of work to do in 2008.

I have been to 11 places on the list.
I agree- I try not to read the traveler section in the newspapers or the glossy magazines because they do tend to emphasis hotels, resorts, and night clubs I can't afford. I would rather backpack anyway - until I am 45 or so. Then it is Motel 8.

I've done the Motel 6/Super 8 thing (usually a little nicer) UNTIL I was 45. Now I start backpacking!

Well I've been to six... Oslo being my favorite. Though I don't play golf, it would be kinda neat to say I played golf in Tuscany haha. I bet green fees are outrageous.

Nope, not yet...I'm not sure how long they'll take to get back to me. I'm going to start fabricating backup plans soon though, just in case.

Uh, how the hell did DETROIT make the top 50???
Isn't it the poster city for American urban blight and freezing weather, to boot?

for a lot of these a quality deemed making it worthy to travel to is "such and such fancy hotel is opening here soon" thats sad for some of these really off the beaten track places because it means eventually they will be touristed up

That's what makes it interesting, no? Personally, I find urban decay and abandoned industrial areas just as interesting as centuries-old architecture. Then again, I'm a weirdo.
