world's best business/wired cities
SO I was reading the Oct. 15th issue of Time and there's an insert article called "The Road Warrior's Guid To Travel" which is pretty much a list of the most "wired" and business friendly cities out there, some of them were actually pretty suprising so I thought I'd share the list... It lists places with free wi-fi which I have included for each city, cos that's good info... I'm sure some of these places are in cahoots with the mag and there are most likely more places to find free wifi than this but it's useful for in a pinch, I think.
In alphabetical order by city name...
1. Bangalore, India... free wi-fi... Coffee World (86 Brigade Road)
2. Barcelona, Spain... free wi-fi... the Starbucks chains in Plaza Catalunya (640 Diagonal)
3. Helsinki, Finland... free wi-fi... open network over Esplanadi Park, center of town
4. Hong Kong... Cafe Zambra (239A Jaffe Road)
5. London, England... pretty much all of Leicester Square has free wi-fi
6. Seoul, Korea... free wi-fi...Yri Cafe (33720 Mapogu Seokye Tong)
7. Shanghai, China... free wi-fi... any Bean & Tea Leaf coffee shop
8. Singapore... free wi-fi... everywhere...all public squres are covered with free wi-fi networks
9. Stockholm, Sweden... free wi-fi... anywhere in the Kungstradgarden Park
10. Tallinn, Estonia... free wi-fi... Restaurant Vertigo (9th Floor, 4 Ravala Road)
11. Tel Aviv, Israel... free wi-fi... Cafe Joe (2 Weitzman St.)
12. Tokyo, Japan... free wi-fi... Cafe Miyama (Shinjuku Minamguchi Bldg. B-1)
I was suprised at the parks that have wi=fi, that's awesome. Also didn't know Estonia was a big place of business people, same thing goes for Bangalore.
Anyhoo, hope someone finds this to be useful!

I am surprised Taipei, Taiwan isn't on there. I had thought that they were putting in a city-wide, free wi-fi system. Maybe it never happened.

Philly flirted with the phenomenon of free wi-fi. We'll see if that ever comes to fruition...

I believe they were going to try a wimax system. I remember a couple years ago, a friend of mine tried to get me to go back and be a part of their engineering team. Unfortunately I haven't spoken to him since I rejected his offer but I wish I hadn't!..

during my travels, i was told that all mcdonalds, regardless of location, have freee wireless...so go to mackers...woot woot

I dont know if they all do, at least yet, but i know lots do. All in NYC have it. My neighborhood one has it too. That always struck me as odd. Would you really break out your laptop in Mac-do and get some work done? I dont know. Maybe parents who's kids are in the play area?
funniest place i've seen the "Free Wi-Fi" offering...a drive thru car wash. Um, great, for those 93 seconds your car is taken through the scrubber you can update your Facebook. actually Nicole might be into that.

Apparently all the McDonalds in my city (Birmingham) have free wifi. As do all BT payphone boxes?! How bizarre. Imagine setting up your laptop in a phonebox!
In the summer in Birmingham, they set up two "beaches" in the city centre. You can sit on the sand on deckchairs for free, and get wifi there are well. And once the sand is cleared up, you can sit on the stone steps and use the net while getting a cold bum!

Japan SUCKED for Wi-Fi access, but almost every McDonald's and Mos Burger had it - though they're NTT hotspots that you had to pay for.
What royally sucked for me is at the times I couldn't get *any* internet, there weren't any internet-enabled McD's or Mos within walking distance anyway. Argh.

It wouldn't exactly be "free" wifi. You probably wouldn't notice it, but it would be included in the city/county/ etc. taxes.

exactly. Its generally referred to as that though because its going to be subsidized for a lot of the poorer neighborhoods in Philly to help bridge the "digital divide." Some other people will be able to subscribe for different services/data rates, etc. It all depends on where you are. Like in Bryant Park in NYC, you can just pop open your laptop and get online. I don't live in the city or pay taxes there so to me, thats free.
