Default 90 day Visa in Germany/ Schengen Question

I am an American traveling in Europe and I know that I am allowed to stay 90 days at a time in Germany. My question is, if I leave Germany does it count as long as I leave the Schengen group and my passport is stamped? Or do I need to leave the EU?

I have a work visa that let me work here until August 19th. But I enter the Schengen on June 17th at a port in Spain from Morocco (I entered Germany before that, but they didn't stamp my passport). I also left Germany and returned July 18th from Estonia. I would imagine Estonia would count as leaving as it's no in the Schengen, but maybe not since it's in the EU...? I also plan to leave and go to the UK, which should also count as leaving...

Am I being paranoid?

EU and Schengen are separate things. I'm not sure how it might work since you had a work permit in Germany but generally this is how it works...

Out of 180 days you are only allowed 90 in the Schengen zone. Going into a non Schengen country (ie UK, Estonia) will not reset your 90 days.

If you're going to UK don't worry 'cause its not Schengen. You're supposed to get 6 months as a tourist there so thats enough time to wait out the reset period. Poland and a few other Schengen nations are not implemeting it until the end of this year, so there is opportunity to travel there. Ukraine is also a great country not in the Schengen agreement and no visa is needed for Americans.
