One Downfall of Destination Hiking
so i flew out to New Mexico last week to visit my parents at their new home in alamogordo. it is nestled between a panarama view of mountains and white sands NP. very beautiful and peaceful! so to say the least, i was really looking forward to hiking. for those of you that don't know, i hike high points in states. it became a hobby when i was still in high school and hiked the highest point in new york and then new mexico and met other high pointers. i've done 17 now. so being this close to Guadalupe Peak, the highest peak in Texas, of coarse i planned on hiking it. i drove out here yesterday and stayed in a hotel in white city, TX on the border of new mexico and mexico. i drove out to the trailhead last night to scope it out. it was so beautiful, i'll have to post pics of that. the hike is 8 miles with a 3,000 ft elevation gain. the hike would take me 6-8 hours. it looked like it was going to be amazing! so i put myself to bed at 9p last night and got up at 5:30a this morning. i took a shower and got my gear together and stepped out the door to downpouring rain.  bollocks! i go to the hotel lobby to find out when the rain will be letting up, because the nature of storms out here this time of year is that they usually pass on through. turns out there is a thunderstorm and flash flood warning in effects until 6 p. Blow!
to say the least, i'm bummed. i'm sitting in the hotel lobby right now killing time until the closest place that sells coffee opens up.
so, there you have it. a downfall of planning destination hikes, the weather is freakin' unpredictable. at least i'll be back out here in november. i'll attempt to hike it again then. gotta stay on the positive, right.

Do you have time to wait for tomorrow? You'll probably be able to find a window of time to do the hike.

^i wish. it's about 3-4 hours away from my parents place. they might be a little peeved if i came out here to visit them and then took most of the time trying to hike this peak. i'm going to try again in november when i'm out here. the raining season will be over by then and the temperater then will be ideal. i'm a bit less bummed out today. that hike just would have been awesome. but it still will be, right...just in november instead.

ahhhhhh gotta love monsoon season out there. it's like that in arizona too. I lived in southern arizona for about 6 months, and definately during monsoon season. it can look sunny and just start torrentially dounpouring. usually though it doesn't last more than an hour and when it is done raning it isn't very humid at all.
hopefully you'll get to try again!
