Internet cafes/Downloads - TravelPUNK Backpacker College Student Budget Travel Message Boards!

So, I've never been to an internet cafe (sheltered existence.. I know, I know...) Do they let you download things from the net so you can transfer them to your devices (camera, mp3 player etc.) My mp3 player plays movies, and I was thinking of storing some on my website and then just downloading them to my mp3 player periodically so I would have something to watch on the copious train rides... But I don't know If that would work...

Some places will let you. Try to hit the 1 euro an hour places. They're usually family run type places. Ask the person working the desk if there is a way to transfer stuff to your MP3 player if it won't let you at the computer you're at. Sometimes you can only transfer stuff from the main computer. Also these places usually the have alot better amenities installed on their computers (ie skype, various messengers) than the pricier places (ie easyinternetcafe).

^ As a heads up, EasyInternetCafe, gives you a screen and a keyboard, and that's it. There may be one computer out and accessible and usually you pay a premium for that. For that reason, I was reluctant to use them for updating my blog or burning photo CDs.

The one in Athens in Syntagma Square is really bad. Half the computers don't work at all. Sometimes the machine that gives out the tickets won't take your money (thankfully it doesn't eat your money). Then half the time the computers that do work freeze up (thankfully it doesn't waste your credit). Go ask the guys selling DVDs/knockoff designer bags/etc in the Monastiraki area where you can find a cheap internet cafe. They like us big girls :D so just smile and they may even lead you to one.

Totally depends on the cafe.

Some - like one I visited in New Zealand - actually made a business of it. They had a networked download folder for each user, and then they'd charge a little bit to burn the stuff to CD or put it on your iPod.

Like Lizz said, look for the little family/individually-run ones. They often have unfettered access to a full computer and you can do pretty much anything. I went into one that actually went and tracked down a memory stick reader for me since my camera wouldn't mount on the computer via USB, and even had Photoshop on the computer for me to use. SWEEEET...
