Hi it is me
Hey everyone...Been reading a lot of the notes here and wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I am planning on backpacking to Europe from August - October. I plan on hitting places like Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Austria, Interlaken, Prague, Budapest, Italy, Oktoberfest, Spain & Portugal. Anyway, I'll probably have a few dumb questions for you guys as I finalize my itinerary and stuff. It would also be great to meet some folks along the way as well.

Welcome to the boards, Ed!
I did a backpacking trip last year about the same time. It was uncrowded after September. The only thing about that time of year is plan on seeing some rain, at least in Rome.

2009: Japan & HK, Southern Spain

2011: India (Goa), Jordan, Jerusalem, San Sebastian (Spain), Amsterdam (again), London, Driving from Vancouver to L.A. (stopping in Portland, Seattle, San Fran and all the little stops), Montpellier (France), Geneva and Lausanne (Switzerland)

Thanks for the welcome...From Boston and yep this is my first backpacking trip...I just made the plane reservations a bit ago so it feels really real right about now
My really, really rough basic itinerary so far looks like this
8/3 - Arrive Paris
Paris - 4 days
Brugge - 3 days (with at least one day trip in there)
Amsterdam - 4 days
Interlaken - 3 days (I have also heard to take the trip to Gimmewald)
Salzberg - 2 days
Vienna - 4 days (I am staying with a friend)
Budapest - 4 days
Prague - 4 days
Berlin - 3 days
Venice - 2 days (1 night)
Cinque Terra - 2 days
Florence - 3 days
Rome - 4 days
Naples - 3 days
Munich - 4 or 5 days (Oktoberfest)
Barcelona - 4 days
Valencia - 3 days
Granada - 3 days
San Sebastien - 3 days
Madrid - 4 days
Lisbon - 3 days
Lagos - 3 days
10/26 leave Paris
Like I said that is so basic...I kinda want to have a bit of freedom to change things up if I want and also to be able stay longer or shorter in a place if I like or don't like it.
I am thinking of making hostel arrangements in advance for Paris, Brugge, & Amsterdam since I am pretty sure on that first leg of the journey. I was trying to hit Italy in September hoping some of the crowds would have died down...Thanks for the tip about the rain.
I welcome any suggestions you all have!

that's a basic itinerary? I gotta be honest... I have never paid attention to the eurotrip threads. Not sure I could handle having a list like that but if you like schedules then rock it man.

I really have no idea what to expect. I have always wanted to travel my whole life but always found a million excuses as to why I shouldn't. Finally I decided to say screw it, I am going...So I will be quitting my job and heading to Europe.
I have spent so much time living that 9 to 5 life, where you plan everything down to the minute, and I find that I keep doing the same with my trip. It is very difficult to let go of that safety blanket that we call a plan. At least for me it is.
It is actually funny because I had to stop myself yesterday from writing a list of goals that I wanted to hit in each stop of my trip. I was even prioritizing them.
Hopefully I will be able to break out of that schedule mentality and truly experience the trip, learn from the people, and discover a bit about who I really am...instead of just this 9 to 5 man.

That's really funny.... about the lists..... I make them all the time.... I'm trying not to be so OCD/ organized freak..... I like to plan, but right now I'm concentrating on researching more than planning. Do you like to read? I know a few books that tell the stories of 9-5er's who became traveing nomads.

Yes I would be very much interested in those books. I recently picked up Vagabonding by Ralph Potts but I have not started to read it yet. Any others you can suggest would be great.
As for Ireland, Scotland, & England, I decided to cut them out this trip, because they can really be a trip within themselves. If all goes well I am hoping to head there for next summer or fall. MMMM Guinness

I think its pretty cool that you are starting your first trip on my Birthday. Last year I was in Brugge on Aug 3. God I love that city. I agree with Jake, just let things happen. Thats the coolest and most interesting parts of traveling. Things will just happen, try to let things go.
