Default Hostel pricing?

Hey guys I'm looking at hostel prices online and I noticed that the further away I book the hostel, the cheaper it is. For example, if I book a hostel for February 30th, the price will be 20 dollars. But if I change the date to January 30th, the price will be 30 dollars. I kind of just want to show up get a place to sleep without booking ahead. But if it costs so much more, then I guess I'll have to book ahead. Whats up with this?? Am I getting this right? Thanks guys

It also could have to do with the hostel's seasons, I know sometimes a month can make a big difference with hostels simply because of the amount of people who frequent it.

I have heard some of the less reputable hostels charge more for walk-ins figuring they probably can make a few more euros since you won't want to go comparison shopping.

I think you can usually cancel your hostels and only lose the deposit. Since that is usually no more than a couple of Euros, it may be worth it (especially on weekends in popular hostels)

In general, plan on 15-20 euros in Spain and Italy and 15-25 in Germany and France. I have never tried this, but apparently you can haggle if you are going to stay put in one location for a week or more.
