I’m studying abroad in London for the Spring ’07 semester. As a U.S. citizen, how many packs of cigarettes can I legally bring with me on the flight? I’ve read a few different figures, so I’m a bit confused.
Also, does anyone know if I could have a buddy send me cigarettes from the U.S. to my shipping address in London? Is there a limit on how much can be sent via mail? Will there be duty fees? Any help would be appreciated, outside of the obvious help I need to quit smoking..

1 carton/200 cigarettes
Your buddy can probably send 1 carton at a time...
Otherwise, do what others do - take a weekend ferry/bus trip to the continent and buy up your smokes for much less, and with no customs restriction. Also, there hasn't been a day where I'd crossed the Millennium Bridge (in front of the Tate Modern) and wasn't offered smuggled cigarettes for £2 a pack.

I actually had to do this in france because it was 5 euro per pack. Whenever any of us flew back to the mainland they bought cartons for everyone.
Just buy them at duty free, they are $25, the most I brought over was 6 cartons. I think legally you can do 5 cartons just because they sell them in bulk like that. You don't have to worry about duty charges when they are getting shipped to you. Just have them listed on the customs label and you should be fine.
Good luck with that though! The thought of me smoking 200 cigs always grossed me out, but hey, to me its like a child with candy. Out of sight, I don't want them, but dangle one, or a carton in front of me, and I will be chain smoking like its armageddon.
