If you are looking to europe cheap first off start with the off-season I repeat i cannot tell you enough although you may miss most of the festivals ....
1. Smaller line-ups for attractions
2. Hostels and Hotels and half of the price and easier to book
3. Public transportation is less busier
4. Lots of discounts and special offers
Off-season!
Also try portugal in october and novmber!
I find most travellers ignore portugal I stayed their last year at a 4 star hotel in the offseason for 20 euros a night
A pint of beer 1 euro!
Fish and chips 3 euros!
So i went out had three pints of beer fish and chips and a four star hotel for about 25 euros!!!!
It is full of culture and you cant beat the prices
1 euro for a six pack of beer
1 euro for a bottle of wine!
Of season and find the hidden gems stay away from those tourist traps!
Let me know if you use this advice

These are useful tips. Europe in the off season is definitely a great experience if you can get away.
As you pointed out, you do miss a lot of the special festivals, but on the other hand, the regular cultural seasons are in full swing, and you'll still find plenty of live music at pubs and bars, so no shortage of things to do.
In some major cities, hotels that cater to business travellers actually reduce their rates in summer, but you can still enjoy them on winter weekends, as they often have cheaper weekend rates. Hostels, though, are definitely less booked, which may make it easier to stay in the hostel of your choice than in the overbooked summer.
A good number of travellers that you meet will actually be other Europeans, since all the american/canadian students will be back at school. This can lead to local contacts and possibly accommodations in other countries on your itinerary - never a bad thing!
While out of the way places are great to visit during the low season, some actually shut down, or the transportation links are reduced in the off season (particular ferry links to some smaller Greek islands), so double check to make sure that you can actually get to the place you want to go! We had a hard time finding budget accommodations in Greece when we went in March a few years back - many were closed til April. Not a trip breaker, but good to know in advance!

Portugal in Janueary and February will definitely be cheap but the weather might be little cooler probably around low 60's
Just to give you what my plans are...
I plane on staying in a 3-4 star hotel plus food and beer and only spend about 1000 euros for the month of October!!!!that would including eating out every night and beers.

hey fellas glad to know this forum, seems like fun
heres my plan
im travelling with a couple of friends to europe off season, lets say september to november (cause our visa only lasts 3 months) we are based in colombia so we have been saving the ass out of ourselves. so how many american dollas (not including the tickets) you think we are going to need in our trip, considering a very basic budget even hitch-hiking when possible.
we have backpacked but only in southamerica so i think it might be a bit different.
ok thats it thanks in advance for your help and you are always welcome in the hostel where i work in medellin.
ps. we have no trouble sleeping even in the floor

Medellin owns! own of my aunts is from there! I would say around 7G would do it for me but I tend to spend shitloads of money on stuff I never even get to use so I guess it depends on the season you travel and how you plan o doing your travels.
Oh, y a la orden parce (is it Parce or Parse?)
