Budget Travel Gear Yo Nellie, which backpack should I git? Questions and answers on gear related topics (i.e. backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, hiking boots, stoves, etc.). |

I'm goin on an unexpected two month backpacking trip to Europe.
I have two days to order one online, and no chance to try one on.
Was told the Kelty Red Cloud was ok, any thoughts?

Did you check out the gear forum? There might be a review or something on the pack you're looking for.
What if you call a gear store and ask to talk to someone about fitting a pack. Explain your situation, and ask what they can recommend - it takes a little longer, but it beats buying the wrong pack just because the on-line description sounds good... You can still order the pack online (ie, if you want to order from REI, call them first!) but at least you get some halfway sensible info first.

Check around online which store you'd like to order from, then call them and ask to speak to someone about fitting a pack. If you won't actually have a chance to try it on, at least speaking to an "expert" will help. Chances are the customer service desk may not be the place you want to call - call a retail store to get someone with hands on fitting experience.
Good luck.

FYI I merged the two identical topics into one.
Wow, how on earth did you manage to score a last-minute two month trip to Europe?? Basically in two days and no chance to try anything on the odds are that you're going to get something that doesn't fit very well. Are you tall? Short? Wide? Thin? Male? Female? Those are key criteria in pack fitting. Personally I like packs geared towards mountaineering and hiking rather than travel. I have a Marmot pack and it's fantastic. But other people have more "travel" oriented backpacks such as Eagle Creek and they love them.
It's up to you, dude. You're going to have to pull the trigger blind, unfortunately. Good luck and have fun!

"scoring" the trip wasn't exactly easy.
Quit my job (working as an atty, and hated it), and decided to join a friend who's leaving soon.
So.....it left me with this, among other, dilemmas.
I appreciate the advice, happy travels all.
