I am starting to plan a backpacking trip to europe for next summer ( specifically August- October) and I am tottally new to the experience, as is my co-traveler.

My question is, I have seen alot of 'hostel reservations' ads, etc..., how hard and likely is it to simply find a hostel and get a spot in it? I'd like to go with as little planned as possible, but if it is smarter to book spots, I think I may go that route.

sorry if this is a re-post.

Summers are always busier, plus you might feel a little more confortable if your first nights are planned, so i might guy a few nights at places in August then wing the rest of it.

or just go for it. either way you'll have an adventure

A big city on a weekend can be a big pain without a reservation. I wouldn't advise not at least booking friday and saturday nights.

If you don't, you might end up sleeping outside and getting a shitty nights sleep. And a crappy nights sleep leads to a shitty next day. Traveling is a million times better on a good nights sleep (and a full stomach).

I had a very hard time finding a place in Paris on a Saturday in June. In August, it would be even harder. Same goes for probably Barcelona, Milan, and other tourist meccas.

If you go off the beaten path you can find a place, but you might end up spending the better part of your day looking for somewhere to sleep. How fun is that? A waste of your vacation time. Just do it from home.
