Hi.
I'm Skye and i'm 21 in 4 weeks,
Im going for a year all over the world, except for Africa because i'm scared of animals haha.
I'm going to Canada for March, April and May; then US to work on a summercamp, and just generally travel for another 2 1/2 months.
Then i'm heading to europe to work for as much time as i possibly can - then onto asia and finish off in Thailand.

Its essentially a working holiday for a year. Just trying to fit as much in as i possibly can.

Im doing it with a freind i met when i lived in Sydney (i'm now in melbourne) and she's overseas at the moment doing the US, and warped tour - something i want to do next year!

Hi Skye and welcome to the boards!

Sounds like you have a fun year lined up, do let us know more about your plans in detail as you get ready! Are you going to do a cross-canada roadtrip by any chance? I did part of that last summer with a bf at the time and it was an amazing experience.

Enjoy hangin' out on tpunk!

Hi Skye. That's an ambitious trip as you'll be working places around the world. It think it's a good decision to experience a little of everything .

I'm not sure what we're doing in canada at the moment. I fly into vancouver, and out to LA. but that can be changed. i have no idea what to expect there, but being that i'm a summer girl i'm hoping in march its a fair bit warmer, and more suited to me! haha
thanks guys. I've been reading here for a while, and finally made the excellent decision to join!

uhhh, sorry to rain on your parade, but Vancouver in March ... will definitely rain on your parade! It's still awesome, but don't expect an Aussie summer. Bring rain gear and a positive attitude, the people who don't like Vancouver are those who think that you can't do anything outside if it's raining. I only lived there for 26 years, so may not know what I'm about, though.

Consider going to Morocco when you're in Europe, that way you can put a check in the Africa column, and I didn't notice too many animals! You can even do a day trip from Spain, if you really don't want to stay, but Morocco is a great country, and worth a longer visit, if you can swing it.

Skye, what a great trip you have planned ! I'm very envious. Do you have a rough idea of your itinerary in Europe and Asia as well ? Where are you at with budget planning ?

And WELCOME !

Well in europe i land in dublin and depart from vienna so the world is literally my oyster. i want to live/work in london but i heard it is ridiculously expensive. so i'm thinking of just staying in ireland to save a few pennys.
and in asia, i got told to stay away from japan because you'll pay 3x the price of china, for essentially the same thing.

budget wise i havent set one up as yet.
I know my roundtrip tickets costs me $2499au. but i'm saving nearly ever cent i earn. thats initially why i came here. for help budgeting, and packing.packing more-so:i'm a girl who owns 50+ pairs of shoes, and amgoing to struggle leaving them behind!

re canada.
is it really that bad regarding the weather.
i wanted to travel in the warmer seasons because packing for winter could take up precious room with bulkier items couldlnt it?

Yeah if you do winter in Canada, it'd be SO GORGEOUS and really cold. If you're going to enjoy the outdoor weather in the winter, you'll need a good winter jacket, gloves, a toque (A knitted hat thingy), boots, etc etc.

Summer time however, we are as good as anywhere else! Right now it's 17C outside (I'm in Northern Ontario), but we did have a sprinkle of snow on the weekend.

Hi Skye, Welcome aboard!! So why did you leave unbeatable Sydney for "cough cough" Melbourne??? Sorry I nearly chocked even asking the question. Sounds like a good trip... I think that you will find that Ireland is just as expensive as London when it comes down to it, but offcourse London is so much easier to travel to europe from and cheaper too. I have saved a bit of money working and living in London and also having a ball at the same time!

If you're just going to be in Vancouver, it shouldn't be especially cold while you're there, mostly just wet. If you're planning to head to other parts of Canada, you'll need much warmer clothing in March! If you can find some light weight long underwear (silk is warm, light, small and dries fast) that can make a huge difference to your comfort level. And it's more compact than a thick pair of trousers or heavy sweater. You'll want to take a fleece jacket on your trip anyway, so that should be plenty warm enough (for Vancouver), but you'll definitely want a waterproof jacket as well, and comfortable, watertight shoes.

My husband swears by Doc Martens, so if you don't already have a pair, you might want to add to your collection! You can find a pair that are decent for walking but still have a little style, and will probably wear them the whole trip. With the length of your trip, you'll probably need a pretty wide range of clothing anyway, because you'll be going through so many different climates - convertible trousers (with capri and short lengths) are a great option so you don't end up with too many pairs. I'd take three pairs of shoes - waterproof walking shoes, a pair of comfy sandals and a pair of flip flops or sandals that you can wear out somewhere nice.

It's not a bad idea to take along a sarong, they are the ultimate in multipurpose items and are well worth the little space they take up in your pack.
